Winamp, another program that's been around a decade++
still does the job for me, and how!

It's definitely better than iTunes player or Windows Media Player IMO.
They all end up doing the same thing and playing the same files, but
winamp is just more fun and feels more funkadelic.

It's also one of the players I can leave minimized while playing a heavy game or running other tasking applications and not having it chop embarassingly
when I've got it hooked up to the stereo or something for the whole house.

This is with using an added on SB Audigy, even.

You'd be surprised how much resources some of these other media players pointlessly consume, from a programmers point of view.

I use WinAmp too. I've been using it since maybe 1997 or 1998, and I still love it. However, I do use iTunes too - I've gotten used to iTunes' music organization, and I also have an iPod; I know there are iPod plug-ins for WinAmp, but I've stuck with iTunes to manage my iPod because it just works, and iTunes is made by the same company that makes the iPod.

I know WinAmp has music organization too.. I just haven't looked much into using that. One thing I love about WinAmp that iTunes doesn't do, though, is internet radio. I use WinAmp for internet radio quite a bit, and I like how it also lets you browse radio stations.

Now I use primarily iTunes, just because I have an iPod and a Mac, but
recently I downloaded some albums mastered in 5.1, and iTunes doesn't looks like been able to play it, so I started playing those songs with VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), which I use primarily for DVDs and downloaded videos.

I use both WinAmp and iTunes, mainly because I've been using WinAmp since around 1997 and started using iPods a few years ago (hence using iTunes). I mainly only use WinAmp now for internet radio and as my default player software for various files (so when I click on an MP3 or a WAV file, my system uses WinAmp to play it). The reason I still use WinAmp for those things is that it seems like a more lightweight piece of software and is faster at those tasks than iTunes. I recently bought a Mac Mini, and I wish I could find something like WinAmp for the Mac (among other things). :) My Windows PC is still my main platform though.

I like VLC too, but one thing I've noticed about VLC is that it doesn't always handle DVD menus properly. It specifically seems to have trouble with certain animated DVD menus. I seem to also remember times when I've used VLC where it didn't even show the top-level DVD menu.

I guess it is due VLC is one of those free software in constant development. That's what Internet better offers. Some software can be great or not too
good, and bugs have to be found by users rather than professional testers.

I'm still using Windows Media Player, but just for sharing my iTunes library with the XBOX 360 :-D

That's cool :) It seems that Microsoft and Apple are going down similar routes in developing home entertainment software. I recently discovered the "Remote" app for the iPhone/iPod Touch in Apple's App Store, which lets you control iTunes on one of your computers wirelessly via your home network, and it's pretty cool.

Also, I have been using Windows 7 on my main PC for a while now, and its Media Player software says it has support for Netflix streaming video, which I think is cool. I've never used Netflix, but I thought that was interesting. But supposedly, Netflix supports streaming video through your web browser too, so I'm not sure what Windows Media Player would add to that (except perhaps playing the movie with a more "conventional" user interface).

I migrated to Windows 7 a week ago, and Media Center works OK with XBOX360, though it's very very slow on loading screens. I have discovered that is
better to go to Video Library (on the XBOX360) and play the video directly, instead of using the XBOX360's Media Center client.

No I can sit on my couch and watch Dollhouse and X-Files on my 42" Tv :-D
