Does anybody know of anyone, or any sources, that might be able to get a clarinet that isn't completely disintigrating in the pads, for somewhere less than triple digits? I'm still totally poverty stricken, but I'm thinking that I really need to find some creative outlets for the amount of frustration that I'm going through (for the same reason). Hell, I'm off my psych meds now, too. Maybe I'll be able to channel all of the [usually mediated and
medicated] frustration and stress into something of the sort and end up
finding out that I've got enough talent to never have to worry about menial labor again.

Just curious, too, but how many people here play woodwinds, or even just have an interest?

Khelair, I can't play any woodwinds but I've always enjoyed the clarinet especially in the context of klezmer music.

As someone who kinda always wanted one and who sold a few in my day at the store, I'd say your best bet for getting a decent clarinet is maybe from a student who didn't follow through especially if the city you're in has a local music program.

With those things you always kinda gotta be able to check the pads and such to know if you're getting a good deal. I think you just have to listen for air leaks.

I would try posting on craiglist maybe and say you want to teach your son how to play clarinet and blah blah blah make it sound corny. You probably would want your kid to be a bad ass clarinetist too so it's probably true even if you wind up playing it yourself. Anyhow, that would be my angle I would try to get a deal. You need to buy a student model from someone who was a lousy student and just wants to get rid of it. They're not really worth much more than 100 bucks anyways when you start wholesaling used clarinets - although that often takes into account some degree of refurbishment when making something retail ready. So again, if you want to express uncertainty about the pads, perhaps you can use that to bring the price down.

If you take this approach, I see you getting a clarinet in the 50-75 dollarrange easily in a bit or perhaps less (but you'll have to evaluate the pads).
