    The Crab Nebula (evening)

    The supernova explosion that created the Crab Nebula was first recorded by Chinese astronomers on July 4, 1054 AD. At that time, it was bright enough to be visible both day and night. A thousand years later, the still-expanding remnant of that supernova is visible as a faint 4 x 8 arc-minute oval in large aperture telescopes on moonless nights. Also listed as Messier 1 in astronomy software, look for the nebula sitting 1.1 degrees to the north-northwest of Taurus' southern horn-tip star, Zeta Tauri. Averted vision and UHC filters
    will enhance your view of the nebula.
