Push-ups and the bench press work similar muscle groups - the chest, front delts,
triceps.
The biggest disadvantage of push-ups it s the fact that you can t keep loading it in the
long term. You can use a weighted vest, but you can only load up until a point.
I don t think you can grow a massive chest with only push-ups, bench press is a much
better mass builder. Even if you do advanced calisthenics movements like the planche,
that ll give you amazing body control, but if you want to have big pecs, you definitely
need the bench press.
Although, I think that push-ups are always a recommendation in any training recommendation, because it s a way to keep working the basics they re easier on the
shoulder joint and work the core.
If you want to stay away from the bench press, you can do one or more of the following
to up your push-up game.
Increase range of motion: Elevate your feet or hands on blocks.
Advanced calisthenics: planche, iron cross, dips
Add load: A bumper plate or some chains on your back.
