Oatmeal is not a bad thing it's packed with fiber, B vitamins, and sustained-release
carbs.
The problem is it's not always enough fuel by itself, especially if you've got a high
physical or mental stress day to come.
Here's what happens: oatmeal consists of predominantly carbohydrates.
Yes, it's complex carbohydrates with fiber, which digests slower than, for example, white
bread, but it still primarily spikes your blood sugar.
That provides energy, but if you don't have some protein and some fat to accompany
that, your blood sugar crashes a few hours later.
That's when you're shaky, brain-foggy, or just drained.
Particularly if you're eating plain oatmeal or oatmeal with honey and fruit. You're
basically binging on sugar and carbs with no staying power.
Your body incinerates it, insulin gets to work, and voila by 10am, you're hungry and
lethargic.
The answer is simple: supplement with fat and protein.
Top some nuts, nut butter, Greek yogurt, or an egg on the side.
Some people supplement their oats with protein powder.
The protein slows digestion and keeps you full longer, and the fat provides energy that
doesn't spike and lowers your blood sugar.
So oatmeal in itself is great it's heart healthy, full of beta-glucan fiber that lowers
cholesterol, and really good for you.
It's just not sufficient by itself to constitute a whole meal for most people. Mix it with something that has protein and fat, and you'll make it through the morning
without needing a nap at noon.
