Per Profile photo for Dr. Vignesh Basaviah: There are many ways in which blood pressure
can rise
Aging - Natural aging causes arteries to become stiffer and less flexible. This increases
the strain on the heart and causes hypertension.
After the age of 50, the expected average systolic bp is 100 + (Age in years). So in such
cases patients should lose weight , reduce salt and maybe go on hypertensives to bring
the numbers lower
Renal issues - Renal problems cause kidneys to be unable to remove sodium and potassium which can cause blood volume hypertension.
Cardiac issues - Arterial Plaque and clogged arteries can strain the heart and lead to
Hypertension
Vasoconstriction - Smoking , increased use of Nasal Decongestants (Afrin, Otrivin) , high
sodium diets, excess caffeine and certain drugs like cocaine can lead to temporary or
short time hypertension.
White Coat - Anxiety can lead to between 10 40 mm hg systolic increase
In rare cases, stress and pulmonary issues can cause hypertension
Dealing with hypertension requires investigation
I order five gold standard cardiac tests - ECG, Echo, Calcium Score, Lipid Profile, HsCRP
and - Kidney function
Based on this i decide whether natural treatment or whether medical regimen is needed
If all tests are normal - less plaque, good Ca score, normal ecg, healthy echo readings ,
good LDL, good kidney readings and HsCRP < 5 mg / L
Then i advise to cut down smoking, limit salt intake to 2,500 mg a day (Indians take
6,000 to 8,000 mg/day of sodium) , yoga, morning walks
After covid , i also advise patients for a heart 128 slice CT scan to rule out muscle
damage due to Covid that can cause arrhythmias
