Mike,
Eat a healthy diet and lose weight . Losing even 5% to 10% of
your weight can make a huge difference.
I watch what I eat...from the plate to the mouth. <G>
Exercise . Pick something you enjoy, like walking. Try to get
at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. You can start with
less time and work your way up to a half-hour if you need to.
Check with your doctor before you do more than that. Stop
smoking.
My exercise is normally when I go to a local square dance twice
a month. But lately, no one has offered to take me there and back.
So, I end up staying home.
Get your blood pressure and cholesterol under control.
Take medication like metformin to lower your blood sugar if
you're at high risk of diabetes.
Right now, the vitals are good, but I can't seem to lose weight.
Don't smoke.
The only thing I want smoking or steaming is the food on the dinner
plate, like sizzling fajitas. <G>
Don't have more than one alcoholic drink a day.
Besides creating violent reactions with medications, it can get you
into a world of hurt. The last alcohol I had was a small champagne shot
glass worth for my late parents silver anniversary in 1977...that stuff
was nasty!!
Take blood sugar medications as your doctor prescribes.
I'll get my A1C checked on Monday, with my yearly wellness check,
full physical, and flu shot.
Things to eat?
Food. <G>
Choose whole grains and whole-grain products over processed
carbs like white bread, potatoes, and breakfast cereals.
I do wheat bread, so I can have the fiber.
Drink coffee, water, and tea instead of sugary drinks.
I never acquired a taste for coffee, and the caffeine in tea
raises the heart rate. Plain water is too bland, so I drink
flavored water from sugar free, low calorie, powdered drink mix.
Choose good fats like those in vegetable oil, nuts, and seeds
over those in margarine, baked goods, and fried foods.
It's rare I order stuff out. Right now, I'm on a tuna salad sandwich
kick, with the varieties of Deli Style, Ranch, Bacon Ranch, Hickory
Smoked, Honey Barbecue, Herb N Garlic, plus Lemon Pepper. I top them
off with Sweet Honey Barbecue Sauce. It's easy to fix, and a good source
of protein.
Trade red meat and processed meats for nuts, whole grains,
poultry, and fish.
When I order out for burgers, I want mine "well done". But, I prefer
chicken or fish...or sandwiches from Subway.
