• ANSI files for Message Groups

From Knight Shadow@21:3/248 to All on Tue Jul 28 20:25:05 2026
Can someone please give me advice on how to get this to work?

Essentially, when a user changes message groups, I want it to display the ANSI file for that particular group. For example fsxNet, Agoranet, Zeronet, they all provide ANSI files. Supposedly with mystic I can just create a file in my theme's text directory called groupX.ans where X is the group ID for the group, but I tried that and it doesn't seem to work when I change to the group using the [J] hotkey in the Messages menu.

Does that "just work" for you guys and I'm doing something wrong? Or did you have to do something special to get yours to work?

Currently, that is the way my system is set up:

    /mystic/themes/themename/text/group1.asc
    /mystic/themes/themename/text/group2.asc

This "just works" on my system. I do not think I had to modify any menus or anything to get it to display the file, unless I am misremembering.

I was looking at the Message Group Editor, and if you go there and select a group, there is an Info File field, but none of mine are filled out, and the file displays nonetheless.

In the menu editor for [J]oin group, I looked to see if there was anything in there which needed setting. It triggers only the (MG) Message group change action. There is no Data or anything associated with it naming a display file.

    The wiki seems to agree:

    https://wiki.mysticbbs.com/doku.php?id=menu_commands&s[]=message%20group

"When joining a message group, Mystic will display the "group#" display file from the theme's text directory if it exists, where # is the group's ID."

I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know, just providing a sanity check for you as a courtesy. This should work.

It's stupid but make sure the permissions are jiggy.

    /mystic/themes/shibboleths/text : ls group*.asc -al

This is great actually, thanks for breaking it down in this much detail. I currently have mine suffixed with .ans, so let me try .asc just to see if for some reason that takes. I'll then go and start playing around with different things in order to get it to work. Just knowing yours works, and that you have the infopath blank, and how you only have the stock menu command, and how you named your files, is perfect.

    Thanks!

So weird. So I have three echonets currently setup. Two of them, the groupX.ans doesn't work, but for one of them it does. The files are all named with the group ID of the group, so I wonder if there is something it doesn't like about the file contents? Hmmm. I'll keep playing around... but at least I know one works, so there just must be something amiss with the others.

    Thanks again!
