Some weeks ago I started a new job. It's part time so I'm only there like
2 days a week. It's in the food truck business. Never in my life have I
worked in a kitchen or at a restaurant. I'm a former musician. Food has
never been a particular interest of mine, I've avoided cooking whenever possible :D.

I recently started driving, also. 43 years old, never had a driving
license (remember I'm a Swede and here we actually can get by without one,
at least until we get kids :D). I got one of these moped cars where one
don't really need a license (not a real one anyways), and I've been
driving a lot lately trying to get comfortable in this thing. It's slowly getting better, but...

A few weeks ago - when coming home from my new job where I had absolutely
no idea of what I was doing all day - I was forced to run some errands and
had to get behind the wheel where I _ALSO_ had no idea of what I was
doing. I stopped and reflected for a while, realizing that I had spent all
day doing things I knew almost nothing about. It felt annoying, to say the least...

Today was my first day of work without supervision and I'm both relieved,
and a little surprised, that everything went great. None of the
catastrophies I had painted pictures off in my head occured. I did my job
well and the manager even complimented me, and he's an honest person so I
know he truly meant it.

And while driving hasn't exactly become second nature yet, it's way less
scary than it used to be.

3-4 weeks ago I couldn't see this day coming, but now it's here and I'm
trying to enjoy it best I can.

Soon I'll be off to new challenges, I guess :S.

I think I would find learning to drive at 40+ to be more annoying/challenging than it was at 16. I think I would also find beginning a job in the food industry at this age to be the same. Good on you for your progress!

Thank you :D. Yes, transforming into an adult is becoming harder the older
we get, that's for sure :D.

Funny thing is that I don't miss my previous bohemian "live for the day" mentality as a professional musician at all. I enjoyed it to the fullest.

Now a life with steady income, some money saved up and a driver's license soubds like a dream life.

It's all about perspective I guess.

Gave up on drinking about a month ago also. I've been a highly functional alcoholic for the last decade or so. Don't miss that either, by the way.

Yeah definitely. I went to treatment, like, 5 years ago. Antabuse and the
whole thing. I was never being an ass to other people, or violent or any
of the classic symptoms, but my dopamine and serotine levels got so messed
up that I eventually did not want to be here anymore. I stayed sober for 2 years and never felt better. And assumed it was safe to slowly introduce drinking again, ha ha. Although it hasn't 'caused any catastrophies (yet),
I still think it's unfair to my family to walk around the house hungover
and grumpy more or less all the time. Because alcohol does that to me.
It's a love/hate thing really. Not to play around with ;).

my main instrument is the bass as well. i started to play very late - when i was 28 - but i enjoy playin' with my friends. i started collecting guitars,

I always liked the, "Quitting smoking is easy; I've done it thousands of times" quote.

That said, with drinking, I wonder how it'd be for someone to cut out drinking, then get to my level.

Which is, "drink exactly enough to do a taste test, and never enough to get buzzed".

I know it's unusual, but having the hard limit of, "if there's _any_ risk of getting buzzed, no more alcohol" feels possibly easier, if prone to red-linining.

But, realistically, if one is a problem drinker, never drinking any is probably easier to stick with. And it's not like there's any great point to drinking alcoholic drinks, _especially_ how I drink.

But I like collecting things, and collecting alcohol gives me a collection that inherently is temporary.

I don't have a drinking problem. I, however, have family members who do and I've always been careful about alcohol because of exactly that reason.

The reason I stopped drinking wasn't because of that either though. I simply decided I didn't want to drink alcohol anymore. In my previous relationship my now ex wanted to have a drink or a glass of wine almost every day after work and it became old pretty quick. Every Friday and Saturday night there was drinking. I decided not to join her in that habit after a while and it was interesting how the social dynamic of the relationship changed after that.

It seems not too long ago I had a relationship with someone who was a real sweetheart in all the ways a guy could want... Smokin hot chick - she looked after her appearance, great cook/chef, fun hostess... She could be very social, loved to entertain those who were to visit.... and was great in bed. More importantly she loved music and had a way about her that could get a guy yacking it up all night, the type of chick that really cared, or so it seemed.

At the time I had somewhat of a hotshot IT job where I was paid a lot of money to do mickey-mouse work, soooooo we kinda lived it up a bit, as in partying and carrying on all the time, going out, who cares about tomorrow, etc.

It seems that I am of the type of person that has that little voice that says "enough", as in, hey "I'm done", lets just crash out, pig out, watch TV and go to bed, etc etc... but she did not have that voice. When she drank hard
liquor, she did not have any restraint. Either she would party all night or pick some stupid thing to get upset about, to say nothing about the hangovers.

Oh I ended that one with no regrets. Actually I think its the first relationship where I was the one who ended shit. I just knew the future of that would be me in the role of caretaker and yeah, no thanks, too old for it.
