  • Earthquake...

    We had a M4.9 earthquake this morning - enough to wake up Californians.
    The epicenter was about 10 miles from me. Apparently, the bay area felt
    it more than we did, the way earthquake waves propagate.

    I knew this one was big because it woke up my 11 year-old terrier, who
    normally sleeps through any earthquake under a 4.5.

    If he's been through enough quakes that you can track his reactions, it's probably time to get out of Dodge.

    I've been in California all my life, been through one or two of this
    size every year, plus the 7.1 earthquake in 1989. I moved to a location
    on the coast, that, curiously, is about a mile from the epicenter of
    that earthquake - there's a plaque out in a state park near me marking
    it.

    I suppose the alternatives are tornadoes or hurricanes. At least with a
    tornado you could move underground - and you can see it coming!
