I have been recently also looking into this as a medium for communicating with others, but am not sure about the size of the user base.

TO be honest, Usenet is not a word I have heard in a long long time. So at least
for me, no not using it. I mean when I first started on the Internet I did, but

back then your ISP usually had News Server that was being feed by Usenet feeds.

Today, I don't think any of them do, if you want Usenet you have find your own provider.

As far as size of the user base, I really am not sure? Much smaller than what I would say it hayday was. (Much like Fidonet, it's still around but it not as active as it once was).

I think the biggest problem with Usenet in my simple opinion is that so much of

what is on there, is questionable. I know some people think that if there is
a trash bin of the Internet, Usenet is it. Of course your mileage may vary.

Hi. I usually post daily on several channels. They still have a good
user base, although it has its ups and downs, and it depends on where
you want to post.

Some groups, like rec.arts.drwho, are very active. Others are active only
with spam, and many, many are not active at all.

I think it wouldn't hurt to check it out and see if it suits you.

I'll let you know what I find there.
So far I have my client setup to interact with it and I have been able to send a couple of posts.

The times I've look into Usenet to try to learn about it, the consistent takeaways I seemed to find were: 1) it isn't moderated, 2) there are barriers to gaining access (cost and availability), and 3) it tends to be full of stuff you wouldn't want anyway (i.e.: spam and kiddie porn).

These things place it at the top of my "not worth it" list.

If your very selective about the groups you want to read then it's just like any other message network.
Some groups have regular post's and others are dead. It all depends on what your looking for.

Now that google has de-linked google groups, the spam from that link is now zero.

It also depends on how you want to access a/the news server. Do you want a dedicated newsgroup software on your computer or
do you want the groups gated to a FTN.

There are a few of us that gate newsgroups into ftn networks, and *only* text based groups are gated.

Here's a sample of what my system is gating, and as you can see some haven't seen any posts (high number of 1), yet others
are higher up.

I use it privately.\
Having a go with Slrn for usenet reading.
If I put my bbs through it all users would be posting under my personal login and I don't think that the admins of that site would like that.

There were moderated groups, back when I was into it - all of the
alt.groups were not. You'd see comp.dcom.telecom (moderated) and alt.dcom.telecom (unmoderated)

One group I read, alt.sysadmin.recovery is self-moderating - you need to
figure out how to approve your own posts as a technical rite of passage
to keep the n00bs out.

SPAM is everywhere, unfortunately.
