Hi, I just wanted to quickly spark a convo about music trackers... I use them myself and have been for a while! I think they're neat. My favourites to use were/are MilkyTracker and Renoise.

As for the impact of trackers I think they've inspired some modern DAWs (I mean Renoise in itself is sort of a DAW but also a Tracker, it has VST implementation n' all)

    Hi, Vintholdt.

Hi, I just wanted to quickly spark a convo about music trackers... I use them myself and have been for a while! I think they're neat. My favourites to use were/are MilkyTracker and Renoise.

I love trackers - as a consumer, not a creator. Similar to what Nostalgia Nerd said about MIDI files, I always find there's something magical about having the computer completely play the music for you "live".

I also love the tie-ins with Amiga. I never owned an Amiga but it's plain to see how game-changing the platform was with its dedicated audio hardware (amongst other things). I often say if we squeezed the juice out of modern hardware the way we did back then... it's hard to imagine what would be possible now!

Oh yeah! To be honest I prefer just playing all my .MOD and .XM files through VLC more than listening to the audio file! IDK why, it's just more fun, but none of my friends know how to double-click an .xm apparently so I have to send them .WAV files constantly or when they're too big convert them to .OGG (im a big .OGG advocate).

The AMIGA did so much for music! Venetian Snares, Christoph de Babalon being some of my favs that used AMIGA's "back in the day".

I like making music in trackers because it's just... fun. You should actually try it even if you're not music because it's again just... FUN!

Anyone ever use Open Cubic Player (OCP)?

I tinkered with creating my own mods in the 90s, but nothing to speak of - was more of a listener and once had a sizeable collection gathered over several years from BBSes and IRC - until hdd failures and lack of backups and I lost em all. Loved using trackers to "see" the music, even though I didn't know the 1st thing about music/notes/samples/etc.

    Fun times...
