I don't think not being born in the US is necessarily a bad thing for government. Arnold Schwarzenegger (who is from Austria) was governor of California for a while. I think it's only US law that the president be born in the US.

They attacked Al Capone because he was Mafia, but he could not get him because of that, so they figured out some other charge to use to take him down.

Meanwhile you can be sure modern politicians will tear people down because they are opposition, but since being opposition is not a crime, they will find some charge for each to take them down. The technique works because anybody political is dirty one way or another, it is just a matter of finding each individual's weakness.

This stuff has been going on for a while on all sides of the political spectrum and I fail to be sympathetic towards anybody who gets canned this way.

My understanding is that you can't pardon someone for that they MIGHT have done. Only what they did. So if they claim that they didn't do anything, can they keep the pardon? You can't pardon someone for what they might do in the future either.

I've also heard from some legal scholars that a pardon blocks a 5th Amendment claim. So if they put these people on the stand and ask them questions about their crimes, they can't refuse to speak because they have the pardon to protect them from the consequences. And refusal to testify is a different crime that they aren't pardoned on.

I was thinking of people using law enforcement with partisan goals. Somebody else in this place called it lawfare. I like the term.

For a practical example, just check Spain. We have a "Governor" (not exactly a governor, but for the American audiences it will serve as an aproximation) from the People's Party (Christian demo-liberals). The national administration (Socialist) hates her guts so they have been trying to take her down by linking her to an irregularity regarding medical supplies her brother might have been involved with.

I am sure investigation will find _something_, but it is clear to me there would not be so much energy and effort poured into this if it was not a political process at all.

Then, conservatives started funding and carrying out investigations against the Prime Minister's wife for illicit abuse of power and traffic of favors, among other things, as a counter attack.

The fun part is socialists started screaming bloody murder because the only reason why they were after the Prime Minister's wife is because of politics, and that honorable politicians don't resort to those dirty tricks. Which is probably correct.

IMO a reason why Spanish socialists are getting nervous regarding this stuff is because conservatives have started using the immoral, dirty and treasonous methods only the socialist party used to leverage. Political lawfare is just one of them.
