    Hello fsxnet world.

I'm Jim/spaceman and Im coming to you live from St. Louis MO, USA via midnight coffee bbs. Its a work in progress (aren't they always?) with a focus on the intersection of machine learning and security.

I spent a large amount of time in my youth calling, hosting and working on bbs's, bbs software and participating in a number of early echo networks. I'm enjoying the push for more federated capabilites these days - and am hopeful that this format (or a derivative) will gain more of a foothold, as we (re)learn how important community is as a species. Particularly excited about the current work to get enigma connected to mastodon.

Super glad to see both mystic and enigma under active development and am looking for ways to participate and support this and these communities at large.

Thanks in advance for your patience as I re-familiarize myself with the tech and space.

    best,

    spcmn!

Yes I've seen some chatter about this on Facebook but nothing posted in the Enigma 1/2 BBS echo about recent updates to the software. Hopefully Nu will keep us posted in the support echomail area also.

Super glad to see both mystic and enigma under active development and am looking for ways to participate and support this and these communities at large.

There's also Synchronet, Nugax is working on CyberBBS and Apam (currently on a break from BBSing (I think that's right?) has Talisman BBS that he's been working on over a number of years. There are also folks working on Renegade and other well known legacy names too.

Thanks in advance for your patience as I re-familiarize myself with the tech and space.

Just a quick note that you're still flying the 1/999 test address so you will want to change this to your newly assigned node 21:1/162 and poll the 21:1/100 HUB using the new session password also assigned to you.

Flick me an email avon@bbs.nz if you get stuck and we can sort you out :)

I have not used NNTP on this BBS for some time but I have been pondering playing with Waffle BBS again (or trying to get it going) and then having a crack at UUCP again... but at the moment have not started on that track..

Kinda need to pace myself and do 1-2 things at a time not 6-9

Is this still a thing? I never joined or played it, maybe it's time to catch up. I remember the times when every big company had to create a presence in Second Life, because it seemed to be the next big thing. And the whole architecture behind it sounded very interesting and open.

Today the kids play Minecraft or Roblox and nobody is interested in the Meta-whatever.

This is in Talisman, right? The NNTP server is directly reading from the Squish base?

    :-D

I actually have a Courier hooked up to my VoIP line, just because VoIP is included in my broadband subscription anyway.

I could never afford a Courier back in the days (and there were plenty of alternatives which were good enough), but when I was thinking of putting something together in recent years, I thought I would finally get one. =)

I used to use Second Life quite a bit for a few years after I heard about it in 2006. I haven't really played it in years though. I'd heard it's not as busy as it used to be though.

I don't really remember big companis having a presence there. But soon after I started using it, I remember finding an aerospace museum someone had built in Second Life, with models of various rockets that had been used to go into space, and almost every Sunday, they had someone from the aerospace industry come to give presentations in there.

ah well... I liked it before.. nowadays, it's been several months I don't login there. it's just... the ones I knew never logged in again and all spaces are empty, mane of the places I liked to visit are gone, and the games loves to change adddress of stuff (dunno why).
all of that makes me even less interested to login there. But it was fun to "walk" and know new places.

I always think that it was before its time. I remember Sony Pictures
having a presence on SL and having a movie premiere. You had to queue in
SL and give a virtual attendant your "ticket". Seemed like trying to map
the real world into a virtual world instead of creating a new experience impossible in the physical world.

Last time I tried it was on a Pentium 166 on a DSL line. I should try it
now with a contemporary desktop and fast internet.

    hi there and welcome.

I came back to the scene around 2012 so now having been back some 10+ years I'm feeling older than Jesus. I hope you have fun with BBSing, it's not as it was in the 90s with lots of users calling in, it's really sysops having fun tinkering with their systems and doing stuff that is of interest to them.

Some dive into ANSI art, others mods, I'm more into messaging and chatting in echomail / help keep a BBS community alive and well .. and so it goes.

Yep there are some users who will call your system, and other sysops... my advice is do whatever you do in the hobby for your own enjoyment first and foremost.... don't worry / feel down if few connect in/call etc..

It's certainly a global community albeit not as large as it was in the 90's, the folk here are supportive and will help you out with any questions , chew the fat etc.

The fact that we're not in dial up days now also means a lot of chat can be quite quick at times, with the conversation advancing over the space of a day vs days.

Anywhoo... welcome to fsxNet and back into the BBS scene, I hope you have fun.

    Best, Paul aka Avon

Your projects are interesting, I've seen several homebrew CP/M machines
recently, it's interesting to see what a minimal system would look
    like.

I've always liked MINIX v.2, you can have a *nix-like OS running on
(practically) on a 286 on up.

FSX_TST - Test messages and other experimentation is welcome here! Messages using the subject of 'Test' *should* receive an automated response
from a roBOT. Humans can also appear magically with reports too.
"Your mileage may vary. Offer not available at Vanda Station"

FSX_GEN - A general discussion echoarea covering many topics.

Yes, I know that but still..

I don't think test messages are encouraged or discouraged in FSX_GEN.

Test messages, especially from new users flying 1/999 are allowed
    in FSX_GEN.

Where does it say that, exactly?

Thank you very much for your welcome. I had a BBS back in 1994-98 and was also a Fidonet Node at that time. I'm very happy to revive this old "hobby" and to be a member of fsxNet.

I just saw in your signature that you use the Mystic BBS 1.12 A49, but i didn't find it on the download page, where can i get it?

I have never had much luck in getting door games to work on Debian. Be good to see how things work out for you.

I'm running under Linux using the docker a Ubuntu 16.04 container. Why 16.04? so the dosemu version is something compatible with the door games and that they run.

Let me know if you have any questions/issues.

I run Ubuntu 24.04 on a Proxmox LXC container with Dosemu2. I've only had
a few problems running doors (The Pit was one of them). But it works well.
