Is there anything for installing drivers on windows 11? I've tried the XP/2K drivers that work under windows 10 32 bit, supposed windows 7 drivers that
were a mac image of a cd and supposed windows 10 64 bit drivers that weren't identified. I've got this working on my windows 10 32 bit system, but want
it on a windows 11 system as I'm not using that IP address to connect to my
bbs and would be able to identify dial-up users from sexpots from that
    system.

there are lots of new motherboards that come with serial ports. just no cable bracket to bring the connector out to the case. those are fairly cheap on eBay though

That's certainly true. They do make USB/serial adapters that work, as
I've done it with an external USR modem connected to a modern computer
running Linux. The BBS software thinks it's talking to a normal serial
    port.

For NVME SSD you have to use PCI-Express X4(+ adapter), so you must use one X16 slot.
If your MB is a little old, the SSD will don't boot, so you can't have here
the main OS, only for storage.
But now SSD are very expensive, not a good time to buy.

I am not 100% sure about how Windows handles those, either. In past, on linux systems, you had to be sure to plug them into a USB 2.x port. For whatever reason, they don't work well with USB 3.x and up. I found that out from experience. ;)

Otherwise, it seems to work just about as well as anything else would in an area where there is no copper, and where I am using what is provided by the local phone company (vs. getting my own ATA -- which I eventually plan to do).

We did - 24 calls on the evening of 19 September, from Warsaw, a
USRobotics Courier on a VoIP gateway with not one metre of
copper on our side. Your modem answers fine and we reached 14400
with V.42bis, but V.8 never completes between us, so V.34 never
gets a chance. One call in full - spectrum, signalling, packet
stats, audio replay, no login needed:

    https://ftn.deadsocket.church/lc/?r=762cfc551d7f16ef7973066d8d95d344

That is the 22:43 call: CONNECT 14400/ARQ/V32/LAPM/V42BIS,
carrier in 45.7 s, 2400 Bd and 1800 Hz both ways, -19.0 dBm in,
-11.5 out, 11898 characters read. One retrain, and it finished
at 12000 rather than the 14400 it started on. We ended it.

Your answer tone is ANSam, not plain ANS: the 2100 Hz carrier
has sidebands at 2085 and 2115 Hz, 20.2 and 20.6 dB down - clean
15 Hz modulation. Your modem announces V.8 correctly. Then it
stalls. From the 22:33 call, our V.8 left on:

    10.5-13.5 s your ANSam
14.0-15.0 s you send JM on V.21 channel 2, we send CM on
channel 1 - the exchange begins
16.0-16.5 s you drop to an 1800 Hz V.32 carrier while we are
    still repeating CM
21.5 s on both sides broadband, nothing agreed
27.5 s you go back to 2100 Hz and start over

That loops until our S7 expires - NO CARRIER at 64 s, while the
gateway cheerfully reports the call connected throughout.
Turning off V.34 alone changed nothing; skipping V.8 is what
works. ATS56=96 plus ATS54=240 and we land on V.32bis.

WHAT 24 CALLS SAY ABOUT THE LINE

    13 connected, 54 %. Speeds 4800 ten times, 14400 three times,
twelve of thirteen with V.42 LAPM. Carrier up in 39.6 to 57.8 s,
median 42.0. Medians across all 24, to us / from us:

    jitter p95 0.82 / 0.88 ms
    jitter worst 2.08 / 1.25 ms
    jitter RFC3550 0.06 / 0.39 ms
    clock drift +17 / +35 ppm, ~5 ms over a 2 min call

Receive level sat between -19.0 and
-19.3 dBm on ten of the eleven connected calls that reported it
    - 0.3 dB of spread across four hours. The eleventh is the odd
one: CONNECT 14400/V32/NONE, no error control, -54.0 dBm, 130
characters, gone 4.3 s later with Loss of Carrier.

    THEN YOU BANNED US ;-)

At 23:34 your gate started saying this instead:

    Synchronet External POTS Support/Win32 v2.1
    Copyright 2025 Rob Swindell
Connection Rate Exceeded. Try Again Later.
    NO CARRIER

and later just: Access Denied. -Click!-

Until 23:32 every call that held an ARQ link pulled 6 to 13 kB
of EleBBS screen; after that, nothing but the banner. Fair
enough - 24 calls in one evening to somebody else's board is not
neighbourly. We have stopped, and there will be no more from
here unless you ask. We never reached the login screen and did
    not create an account.

    One question ?
The thread says StarTech 56k USB, Conexant, hardware - but not
what is behind it. Real copper POTS, or an ATA or VoIP service
in the way? If your side is VoIP too, two G.711 legs back to
back would explain a lot about V.8, and that is a more
interesting result than either of our modems. And if they are
handy: what does your modem report after one of our calls, and
what init string are you answering with?

    Hello Shurato!

Thanks for tracking down the block - good call on rgtel and the
127.0.0.1 in its blacklist. I will dial in again now it is cleared.

Short version: don't change a thing for V.8. Diamond Dave reaching
you at 31200 settles it - 31200 is V.34, and V.34 only starts after
V.8 completes. So your side negotiates V.8 fine; the trouble is not
    on your end.

The 14400 was mine. My Courier does 31200/V.34 to boards in Europe,
so it is not V.8-shy either - it just cannot complete V.8 across my
route to you: Warsaw -> a cloud VoIP trunk -> PSTN -> your line, and
that long hop adds enough delay and jitter that the V.8 tone phase
falls apart before V.34 can lock. On a cleaner path, like Diamond
Dave's, it just works. Nothing to fix on your side, no init string
    needed.

I will run a fresh batch now the block is gone and post the
diagnostics - public link, no login, as before. Mostly an experiment
my end: a Courier on pure VoIP, not a metre of copper.

    Best regards,
    kombos

I second this, my Rockwell got absolutely abused and still answered every stinkin' call. USR's were overrated and shoved down our throats in my area.

I ran ISDN at home in the late '90s, used it to connect to work and to
the internet. I connected a 56K modem to one of the B circuits for the
BBS and was surprised to get a 56000 connect. Turned out it was another
ISDN user, we had digital all the way from one modem to the other...

Great times, I could roll over to the other B channel and take two
calls occasionally, use one B channel for the BBS and the other for the
internet, or nail both B channels up for 112kbps of internetty

I was kinda late to the "Surfin' the Net" and "Journey in Cyberspace" game because I thought it was a fad, the marketing/media promotion was stupid, and honestly I didn't understand the hype behind WWW when I was content with Gopher, IRC, FTP etc... Netscape on OS/2 was not exactly a thrill ride either.

I think I mentioned that this and some other computing habits changed almost overnight when I saw Windows 2000 Server edition... all bets were off.

Now am happily content to be using and thoroughly abusing my Fiber connection... I doubt I can really go "beyond" that.

I do admire Starlink, was thinking of that for a backup connection, for my career requires constant monitoring/babysitting remote stuff via VPN etc.

Its a bit pricey yes, but... it can work "anywhere", and the mini-dish or whatever that router was, its possible to run off battery packs if needed.

The idea is to have Internet in even the worst-case scenario, which sortof presented itself recently up here with a bad storm which also knocked out cell service, so could not use my laptop Simcard nor tether off my phone.

Although my UPS ran the router and Fiber gateway for hours, the outage lasted into the early morning. Sounds crazy but I refuse to lose any shiftwork because of no Internet.

I just searched Gemini for optimal settings for HT802V2 and dial-up BBSing.
LEC and VAD were enabled and disabled, I think. I'm not sure if much else

For VoIP use G.711 Codec, low latency RJ45 network, so forget using wifi or PLC Powerline. Use minimal ethernet switch/router in the patch.

Here in France the ISP Box also have his one VoIP line, there is a SIP
setting to check. Two active VoIP line typically use the same 5060 TCP/IP port so it may have conflict.

Yes, I was impressed that it's a hardware modem! Now I need someone to

    my connection! 986-303-1430.

I've tried a few times now. I've made it to the questionaire where it asks:

"Any SBBS or MajorBBS Games you'd like me to add? Add to this list!"

It was hard to get there because the questions before it kept telling me I entered an incorrect value and press '[Enter]' to continue. This one also got stuck in the same loop. I didn't lose carrier. I was online for more than 20+ minutes but could not get past that question loop. I'll have to log in with telnet and answer it and then dial in again.

Another thing I noticed (I was dialed in at 4800) is that the ANSI graphics seemed to stop a bunch of times about a quarter of the way down the screen. I could hit enter or whatever and it would move to the next screen. I wonder if I'm connecting too slow? I picked 4800 to hopefully avoid some line noise. I know I can do 300 without issue but that's wayyy too slow for ANSI. I doubt I can do 9600+ without noise.

I'm not giving up though! I'm going to try again next time at a faster connection and see how that goes. :)

Hopefully I don't get my phone # caught in the spam filter by missing the ESC prompt after dialing in!

n the same loop. I didn't lose carrier. I was online for more than 20+ minut ut could not get past that question loop. I'll have to log in with telnet an swer it and then dial in again. Another thing I noticed (I was dialed
in at 4800) is that the ANSI graphics s ed to stop a bunch of times
about a quarter of the way down the screen. I cou hit enter or
whatever and it would move to the next screen. I wonder if I'm c
ecting too slow? I picked 4800 to hopefully avoid some line noise. I know I do 300 without issue but that's wayyy too slow for ANSI. I doubt I can do 96 without noise. I'm not giving up though! I'm going to try again next
time at a faster connec n and see how that goes. :) Hopefully
I don't get my phone # caught in the spam filter by missing the ESC
    ompt after dialing in!

Nope, 127.0.0.1 is whitelisted, I believe! Any way, Diamond Dave was able to connect at 31200. Try 38400 and it should train down to a decent rate,
though you may have to try a few times.

Thanks. Good to know. I didn't know if you possibly had a filter to block incoming phone numbers that spammed as well.

Signed in with telnet yesterday to finish the survey. Going to try a higher speed today and see how it goes.
