he set up an echo feed but didn't give permission to any of the echo groups.

I said that almost 10 years ago now - when I actually cared. However, for a long time he was one of Janis' puppets so he got away with it as long as his system kept polling hers. Some of them are here. Fidonet is rather friendly in this corner of the world.

An app, yes, but Aftershock and HotFogRf are the wrong model for me. I would use my phone as an adjunct, not the centre of my BBS messaging, therefore an offline reader based solution would work better, because then the BBS would keep track of what I've read (downloaded) up to, rather than having effectively two independent systems to deal with. And yes, dumb it down, even if it uses QWK, it doesn't need to show the gory details.

Yeah, when Fido-over-the-internet became prevalent, moderators lost their hammer (the feed cut).

I have a different take on moderation -- when I moderated echoes, it was as much about promoting new discussions, participating in them and promoting the echo as it was about enforcing rules. When I see an echo where the only postings are the monthly echo rules, I think it does a disservice to the network.

A feed-cut is certainly possible. But it would take a fairly serious act of "excessively annoying behavior" and have a complaint sent up the ranks to

Agreed. A little more annoying than routine dead-areas are when I see an echo with some real good convo going on that a moderator feels to need to
routinely post "message stats" or rules when its not needed at all. Stats belong in their own dedicated echo. Who freaking cares about the top poster or top BBS software. We all know Mystic 10 More Cowbell Edition is the best.

It's probably a New York thing. I've experienced butt heads in the 90s and again in 2019. They seem to have an ego problem and are unwilling to admit they
are wrong. "Newbies" are a problem for them. The New York coordinators will be big contributors to

That's true, and IMO part of the role of a moderator is to consolidate or close it up if there's no activity. Fido, for example started consolidating some of the echoes, but getting echoes off of systems is the challenge -
it's too easy for sysops to leave dead or disconnected echoes on systems.

What I've always wanted is to have a BBS that, when connected to the entire backbone, if it receives a message would auto-create a BBS area and keep a tally of when areas were last accessed. An area isn't accessed for a year? Auto-remove the area.

The monthly ghost-town moderator rules postings would break that though.

I find it amusing that the ones who complain about authoritarian coordinators tend to have no problem being in an Othernet where in fact, one ZC ultimately controls the net, its tends to be his way or the highway, its his rules, etc.

LOL, my first experience with fidonet was similar. GT Power BBS did not

That wouldn't work, because there's a lot of legacy software out there, which will never implement such a command.

I'm Nick... been running both since '94. I obtained the D'Bridge source code sometime in '04... 05 I think. I think Renegade was open-source at that time.

The Renegade source code I work with is the Y2KA2 version. I stopped following any of the newer stuff beyond that since the new author took the direction
in a way I wasn't happy with. I decided to fly solo and fix everything myself.

Anyhow D'Bridge has a command-line utility to report/remove dead areas. Passthrough areas with only one link left can be automatically un-Areafixed.
I believe the two-way Areafixing system is compatible with Fastecho and
HPT... maybe more since the whole point of Areafix was to automate area management.

I wrote a custom program to "mirror" the D'Bridge area database to Renegade so I no longer need to manually add/remove areas.

At this time there is only *.MSG and Hudson/Goldbase support. With the country going on the proverbial "tilt" over the virus I may just add JAM and Squish.

to grab the mail. If I can't figure out what's causing rex to crap
out I'll just use it or binkd stand alone. Had the mail in under 5
