They plan to abandon the "European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and its protocols."

On August 25, 2025, the official internet portal for legal information published a resolution from the government of the Russian Federation from August 23, 2025, No. 1266. This resolution approves and submits a proposal to the president of the Russian Federation to be presented to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to terminate the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment of November 26, 1987, and the corresponding protocols of November 4, 1993, which were signed on behalf of the Russian Federation in Strasbourg on February 28, 1996.

It's six of one, half a dozen of the other. They already don't adhere to the treaty, so what's the difference? It's more honest to officially terminate it. Then, at least you can't be accused of never keeping your agreements, a trait that is very characteristic of the Russians.
