Hi Paul,
Just checking this is getting out?
It is...
Hola Paul!
@PATH: 770/100 1 280/464 5555 221/6
Yes
Thanks, I've noticed a significant drop in traffic volume in this echo since mid May and was wondering if something had changed? i.e. systems
no longer talking to each other etc.?

There are bunches of people in the nodelist who just have a VPN somewhere
You reminded me of something I wanted to ask here... Is it rather
common to have fido nodes hosted in VPS nowadays? Any estimate?

This Telegard system is hosted on a VPS currently, it's a point off of
my Mystic board which is on a Pi in my basement.

... if anything, to get out of running
servers on a home cable connection and being able to host mail directly instead of jumping through hoops to get past a port 25 block.

What you're saying is you've got a khrappy internet-provider...

Mine is so khrappy they didn't even know they were blocking 25. I decided not to fight them on it too much as I did not want them realizing they could block other ports, too. :O

Just wondering ... in the US could that be considered a violation of
the first ammendment?
My ISP blocks nothing.
Just wondering ... in the US could that be considered a violation of the fi ammendment?
Pretty sure most if not all US and Canadian ISP's by default block
port 25 and many require that you sign up for expensive business
plans to have a static IP and open ports... as I had to.

I'm with Rogers residential cable, port 25 is blocked inbound and outbound, though I can still telnet/SSH/binkp into my board on standard ports.
And you're right, I would need to "upgrade" to business internet for a stat IP. That being said, I've had this same IP for about the last year, it has changed on occasion in the past, but not very often. My IPv6 prefix change far more often than my IPv4 address.
Bell Fiber business customer here... static IP, nothing blocked.
They initially insisted on that stupid Wifi router to talk to the
Nokia media gateway but I quickly replaced that with Pfsense on
Vmware.

Or purchase virtual server services so you can run your own mail server.
We built a townhouse in Binbrook where there was fiber run directly into th basement. We never activted it as the house came with a free year of internet, TV & phone from the cable provider.
That's kind of cool. If they ever run fiber on my street I may pick your brain about that. Rogers installed the modem here in about 5 minutes, did speed test and was on his way. After he left I noticed I was double NAT'ed and wifi was active on the modem as well. I factory reset that and put it into bridge mode.

I'm impressed with the tech-stuff newer townhouses have - My dad and
his wife moved into one in recent years where there was an actual patch-panel in the basement and Ethernet jacks in every room, sometimes
a couple. The way it was designed to sit just under the stairwell was
very neat and clean... even enough room to slide in a standard 19" rack unit if necessary.
The Nokia media gateway that comes with the Bell fiber install expects Vlan-tagging, which most off the shelf routers cannot do on the WAN
side of things. But Pfsense does it perfectly...

The first ammendment protects US citizens from (most) censorship by the *government*. Corporations (e.g. ISPs) are free to censor citizens
however, so no, not a violation of any ammendment.

Yup. BTW I said port 24 a minute ago, meant port 23 (telnet). Cox
cable did that 3 years ago and we dropped them. A year later they
refused to host email at a reduced price and required you pay the full pagage ans swap back to them. I got rid of cox for good.

Oh dear, never looked at it that way.
So when I am in the US the 1st ammendment does not protect these right for me?
I honestly don't know how much of our constitution-protected civil-rights applies to non-citizens, ...
