I just got my 2 LORD's registrated thru William Hughes at bill@playnetwebhosting.com. I just e-mailed him and told him I want to get key's to LORD and LORD2, he sent me a link to pay and I got the keys shortly after that.

how do you even know you're dealing with someone legally and not someone with a keygen who's making a buck?

I remember the various names over the years who would bbs people would
contact via calling up multiserv in kansas city. There was never any William Hughes and now people have been contacting this guy for the past 5 years.

i know there's a cracked exe for lord 4.08(atleast 2) and i know there's a keygen. so makes me wonder.

also my codes are out there for lord and planets.
and lord2 has been cracked for over a decade.

I looked into this guy and he's not in kansas city,mo.
his site is based in washington.

Here's how *I* became aware of William Hughes:

- On Jan 4 2020 I sent an email to Laura Waldon (llwaldon<at>mseaudio.com),
asking for registrations. I found this address on an archived door
discussion post on Google Groups.

MSE Audio is the parent company of GamePort, or WAS. Looks like
they're called SoundTube now.

- I received a reply on Jan 7, 2020 from then President Lindsay
Humphrey, (lkcombest<at>mseaudio.com) explaining to me that I may
purchase these on the gameport website. She CC'd William Hughes
(bill<at>playnetwebhosting.com) directly on this reply.

- Since I had someone's attention, I took a chance and mailed out a
physical check to the GamePort address and let them know via email
that it was on its way. That was on Jan 15, 2020.

- On Jan 22, 2020, my bank showed they deposited my payment.

- On Jan 27, 2020, I emailed them asking for my codes. Minutes later,
William apologetically replied and said I should have them later
that day. That evening I was all set.

So while PayPay was not involved in my specific case, William is indeed the individual I dealt with at the time. I think the fact that the president at the time CC'd him into the thread and I mailed a physical check to their address both point to him being legit.

one person that i would always talk to there was a shannon. sadly yahoo mail nuked all my old msgs so i lost tons of stuff.

all i have are text files saved with my codes for lord and planets. i have 3 or more sets. former sysops in my area donated them to me when they hung it up.

The person who owns gameport is an enigma. Nobody has knowingly talked to
him over the years. this includes mike preslar and other groups of people
who have tried to buy the source. i supposed i could ask seth who he talked
to.

The thing i know is dude has a ton of side hustles and he has a ton of ugly websites. he's also into the 80s and music and sound equipment.

I would always talk to shannon who seemed to handle all the registration and other questions.

What i know of the company is multiservice / multiserv either owns gameport
or a person working there does.

While seth may remember one or more people from Metropolis GamePort at the time, it may or may not have necessarily been GamePort's owner at the time.

I don't think knowing who any one individual is who owns/owned GamePort is important. At least not anymore, considering they've been owned by two or more other parent companies in the time that's passed, and employees naturally just move on or retire. If I had to guess, William Hughes is probably MSE/SoundTube's web guy, and he probably just inherited access to all their legacy web stuff when he was contracted by them. Also guessing they can't see the sense, or find it in their budget, to modernize the GamePort site for the 5-10 people every year who ask for registrations. So they just leave it as it is, not knowing what to do with it..

But I'm just sitting here speculating while procrastinating at work. Whatever you think of William, he may still know something about GamePort's history or at least the truth about how he came to be involved with them.

And I agree with you on both points: LoRD is great, and people should just be using keygens at this point since no one officially wants to sell it anymore.
