I dunno about other states - but Illinois allows using your call sign
as your vehicle licence number. I do note some of those around my area.

Nancy was a neat lady - who used to come to Cooking Echo picnics -
which were once an annual "thing". She also played a mean game of Scrabble.

She did that on my BBS. Sean Dennis, KS4TD (he's also an amateur
radio operator) dedicated the game of Scrabble on his BBS to her
memory.

When she passed, Richard let me know "you've lost a Scrabble partner".

The one thing I remember most was her sense of humor. In one QWK Mail tagline, I noted "I took an IQ test, and the results were negative".
Her reply was "That explains a lot. <g,d,r>". She said she hoped I
wasn't offended by that, and I told her "I got a good laugh out of
that". She is sorely missed.

Title: Ham 'N Apple Shepherd's Pie
Categories: Potatoes, Pork, Fruits, Vegetables
Yield: 6 Servings

2 c Potatoes; mashed/whipped
5 c Ham; trimmed, diced
5 Tart cooking apples; cored,
- peeled, diced
2 Sweet onions (Vidalia, 1080,
- or Walla Walla) chopped
1 1/2 oz Env dry onion soup mix
1 tb Chicken soup base; GFS or
- Minor's
1 c Hot water
3 tb Butter; melted

Set oven to 350ºF/175ºC.

Dissolve onion soup mix and chicken base cube in hot
water to form broth. Set aside.

In a large, deep baking dish, arrange alternate layers of
ham and apples, sprinkling each layer with onions and
reserved onions and broth. Cover with mashed potatoes.
Brush with melted butter.

Bake at for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until potatoes are
browned and dish is heated through.

Serve hot w/steamed vegetables on side.

Especially at a ham radio convention, like the DX Convention (usually held in April here in Visalia, but cancelled for 2022. I think they jumped the gun, so to speak...) I thought about using my receiver for an antenna mount, but then where would I connect our travel trailer... I do have a short two-section tower that is designed to be connected to a receiver, but it is for portable use.

I saw a meme which looked like a porcupine with all the antennas on the roof...and a bumper sticker that noted "As a matter of fact, I do NOT have enough antennas on my car". <G>

Arkansas does allow such, and offers vanity plates that say "AMATEUR
RADIO" at the bottom. To me, I'd rather not give anything tempting in information...even a ham radio bumper sticker. One bumper sticker I would
like to get though is one from Operation Lifesaver, that promotes safety
at railroad crossings...noting "ANY TIME IS TRAIN TIME...LOOK, LISTEN,
LIVE!".

I lost my wife nearly 15 years ago, so I know what he's going through.
I met her on a BBS that was run by the local college years ago, and we
truly became "Married With Modem Sysops". We played each other in the doorgames, and while she was a great winner, she was a sore loser. <G>

Last night I commented on a customer's ham plate - W9 RAY. Asked him if
the Funny Candy Company was doing "vanity" call signs. He told me his
name is Bill. Then said he had been friends another ham who had W9 BIL.
But the FCC wouldn't let them swap. Bv)=

Mine is indeed a vanity call. My original call was KF6KMY, issued in April 1997. When W6RAY was made available, I snagged it. The previous possessor was/is named George Palmer from Parumph, NV, and had been available for a very short time when I applied for it. It had been invalid for slightly over two years in 2007. The FCC removed the Morse Code requirement and I took my General class test the very next day. By the end of the month, I had applied and was granted the vanity call. I was a Technician Plus for about 24 hours. In 1997, there was still the Novice class, so I had to take the Novice test AND the Technician test.

My friend Scott took the tests the same day. His call is (still) KF6KMX.

In a previous message, you mentioned you are more into computers (confusers) than radio. I am responsible for three DSTAR gateways, a packet BBS (currently offline), and multiple 5 gHz microwave links (for the aforementioned DSTAR gateways), along with computer controlling my radios - I can sit in my living room and talk on my radio in the "shack".

I started my first BBS on a C=64 with two floppy drives and a 300 bps modem, then on a 128 along with my brother. I still have my first 9600 bps Practical Peripherals modem that was in service 30 years ago. My first Fidonet node number was 1:205/222, then 205 was broken up and was 1:214/222, then, and still, 1:214/22. I found a copy of the first nodelist I was in in 1990 or 91.


Oh WOW. Sorry for the rambling. Any way, you can combine more than one hobby together and have some real fun.

It's probably like the bumper on my old Beemer - a plastic cover. So, I
use the magnetic stickers on the trunk. Which makes them closer to "line
of sight" level - And they remove cleanly without me needing to go down
the AutoZone for a bottle of "Goo Gone" adhesive remover.

Then I can stick the magnetic sign/strip to my front door (it's metal
clad) or to my computer case.

I came across my old Delta Gold 286 tower whilst re-arranging the garage
this week end. I'm going to fire it up and see if my old Citadel-86 BBS software is still there. And if my Browser (Netscape) will still work.
Bv)= I'm pretty sure the 9600 baud modem card is still live - if I want
to tie up my land line.

And if there are any Citadel boards left to network with. I sort-of
doubt that.

With my luck lately (if it weren't for bad, I'd have none), when I get a glaucoma check next month, if they determine it's too dangerous for me to drive, and I'll have to sell the car, and turn in my license.

The Post Office apparently lost the cellphone I bought when switching
from Verizon to Consumer Cellular, to save $75 a month. They have lost
so much mail to/from me, that it's not even funny...and I tell medical facilities that "if you won't take an over the phone payment, you won't
get your money". People were stealing stuff out of my home mailbox, and
off my front porch, so I got a Post Office Box. But, if I can't get to
it (no transportation), it does me no good.

Well, if I have to pay another huge fee for a phone, I'm going to tell Consumer Cellular "forget it"...and once my Verizon service dies, I'll
no longer be reachable via telephone. Next (the way my luck is going),
the computers and internet will fail, which will kill the BBS (not to
mention my involvement with ham radio and square dancing)...then if I
have had to get rid of the car (as noted above), I'll be stuck at home,
with no way to communicate with the outside world, no way to get groceries
or medications, and basically will become an isolated hermit, and just
sleep all day. The hobbies aren't even a diversion anymore.

It has gotten so bad that I'm on a self imposed bland diet of just
wheat bread and butter, with lemonade koolaid, so I can take my meds.
I may have a roof over my head, plus a place to sleep...and still be
on this side of the grass. But, the only golden thing about "the
golden years" is the color of your urine.

It looks like for the second year in a row, my birthday week will be
an absolute disaster...where I'll just cry nonstop for a week, and not
answer any phone calls, email, etc. -- telling folks "I'm burned out",
and disappear for awhile. Folks are likely sick and tired of hearing
me whine, complain, and bitch...but no one will put themselves in my
shoes. I hold the greedy politicians in Washington (who lament they
can't survive on $250,000+ a year) in utter contempt.

Needless to say, I'm not a happy camper right now. I'm long overdue
for something good to happen to me...but lately, I feel that I'm
cursed.
