Hello All.

I am considering changing from IRex's BinkP server to using binkd (OS/2 version). There will no doubt be lots of questions, first of which will be in configuring it to run and do all the stuff that is built into IRex's implementation of BinkP (like running certain .bat or .cmd files to move incoming Fido stuffs to their proper directories, etc.

The version I have shows this about itself:

Does this mean that it will not work with a Binkley style outbound?

Is there someplace I can find complete documentation on its set-up and operation?

That is not the latest version. The latest version is binkd/1.1a-111/OS2 binkp/1.1

Ask Tommi Koivula. He alway compiles the latest OS/2 version.

Does this mean that it will not work with a Binkley style outbound?

Binkd works fine with BSO. In fact, it only works with BSO.

I dropped Irex about 10 years ago. It worked fine, but it had some annoying bugs that would never be fixed because it is abondonware. The final straw was that I wanted my system to upgrade to IPv6 and Irex will never support IPv6.

As my Irex was working together with InterMail (fork of Frontdoor), it was not operating in BSO mode, so I had to convert my system from AMA to BSO. That was a bit of work but I never regretted making the jump. I dropped POTS in the process.

Making the OS/2 version of binkd do IPv6 is a bit of a challenge since OS/2 does not support IPv6 and in all likehood never will. I liked OS/2, but dropped it 20 years ago because I could not make it talk to Novell Personal Netware. But I do not want to start an OS war here...

Not really. There is a sample config floating around somewhere. It is not entirely up tp date. But you can get lots of help here...

amiga_4d_outbound (ASO) is just an additional and optional outbound style that has been enabled. This compilation flag doesn't disable BSO. I use a patched version of Squish and Crashmail for Amiga style outbound, but AFAIK most common tossers don't support ASO.

You may freq magic 'binkd2' for the latest binaries from 2:221/360.

binkd can create a semaphore file when certain files are received, which you can then use to start whatever task needs to happen.

I've also sent Marc my binkd config for Linux in the hope he might find something useful in there. Maybe between us we can get him up and running.
I've been really happy with binkd. It is reliable and just works. I was thinking of swapping to Syncrhonet's BinkIT but decided against it for now.
