Even if it's true - this is not a threat to the U.S., we mostly hire people with a valid SSN and don't wire money overseaas.

I am not certain what you define as a "solid media" but, if you type the following into google.com, you will get plenty of articles and most are on topic: north korean hackers getting jobs.
Their government sponsors hackers so there are at least some North Koreans
who have at least some technical background.
