Arch or gento, which has moar apeal for neckbeards?
You want Slackware, if you stick with Linux. If you really want to impress the neckbeards, go Minix or BSD.
I must rock - I just fired up a MINIX VM.
Original Minix or the one that has the virtual memory capability? ;)

Original. I go way back with it. I got bored at a job in 1995 and set
up Minix on a 286 that I found underneath my desk. It became a
challenge to see what I could get it to do. I ended up setting up
SMTP, POP3, caching DNS and a web server on a 2 mbyte, 8 MHZ system.

I almost had Minix-VMD (that's the VM utilizing one, right?) working, at one point, but kind of got distracted again. I probably would've been with Minix a lot longer on the XT, but wow, 640k limitation? Ugh.
When I get my primary computing iron back online I'm going to try out some of the old (and newer) operating systems on VMs again; I miss doing that kind of stuff. :)

Anyways, to answer your question, these days it seems the mainstream "neckbeard" type individual appreciates arch a bit more.
