are you asking what sofware they are using to be a vps provider or what they are using for their users to manage the vps?

I am running on GNU/Linux using KVM.

Q6600
4GB of memory (removed 4GB for another project)
200GB HDD for OS
500GB RAID 1 for VMs
CentOS 6.2
Multiple VMs, one for BBS, although I'm in the process of testing a netbook
for hosting the BBS

I've use VMWare ESX and ESXi, vSphere (same as ESXi), XenServer, Xen, and KVM.

I like ESXi the best, but getting annoying with their licensing. XenServer is still pretty slick. KVM seems to be the cheapest choice at the expense of
being a little overbearing.

oh, when he was asking about hosting virtual servers, i thought he meant he wanted to be a provider.

anybody can run a vm as long as they have a 1ghz+ cpu and about 2gigs of ram
of course it depends on what you are using it for. you would have to increase your requirements.

Yeah I wasn't sure. The lowest I've ever run on was with ESXi on a 600mhz
quad cpu system with 512MB of RAM. It ran great so, like you said, probably depends on what you want on it.

I run the majority of my stuff on VMWare these days. (esxi 4.1). Tho I ->also use Proxmox for the real 'low end' stuff.

I run my production stuff under Hyper-V on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, with the exception of the BBS, which is on its own dedicated machine and dedicated static IP address separate from the rest of my networks.

I'm running a copy of MajorBBS on an old Mac Mini using virtualbox. It's running some version of Freedos that includes a network stack.

I'm also running a virtual PDP-11 (RSTS/E) so you can play Dungeon and Colossal
Cave.

I'm running VirtualBox on Mandriva 2010. I use it to guest Win XP (since I was never able to get it trio-booted with Mandriva and Vista), and Fedora so I have a Linux install that I can test and trash at times.

Which reminds me, my system needs more memory.

I use Virtual Box, as well (for Linux, however). Just wanted to take a minute to let you know that if you're using it, you may want to be really, really careful about taking periodic backups of your virtual machines. I'm not talking about the Virtual Box snapshots, either. I've been getting harped at by professional developers that I know about switching to VMWare due to Virtual Box eating virtual machines regularly. At first I didn't pay them any attention, but eventually it happened to me. When my VM crashed, I tried restoring to the most recent snapshot. I was unable to, so I contacted support on the oracle forums regarding this. Turns out that the snapshots, in anything but the most ideal conditions, are completely worthless. Making your own backups of the VMs is imperative.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know, because if your VMs are anything like mine, it's a pain in the ass to lose all of that configuration and customization when things go down. I know that VMWare isn't free, but if you've got any possible way, it's a lot better than Virtual Box. Web searches on their kernel drivers (for linux) shows a whole lot of nerd rage about absolutely terribly written kernel modules, as well, which can cause entire system instability.

What version of vBox are you using?

I had Ubuntu 7.04 Live CD running in Innotek vBox v1.4.0 on this XP
computer, and played with it a few times.

I recently got the Oracle vBox 4.1.18, the 4.1.18 installation said I
had to Remove the Innotek version before I could install it, so I did.

That was all right with me because I still had the 1.4.0 setup files
just in case I wanted to go back.

During the 4.1.18 install Windows gave me messages that there was
problems with a Windows Logo Test but I went on and finished installing
it.

I tried putting Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Live CD in 4.1.18 but had problems
with it.
I also tried the U'u (Ubuntu) 12.04 LTS Live CD with vBox 4.1.20 and
that didn't work either.
So I went back to the Innotek 1.4.0 and U'u 7.04 and now can't get
Firefox to go to the internet.

And still getting the complaints about failing the Windows Logo Test
whatever that is.

Both Live CDs work fine when booting from them on my XP computer.
I'm not ready to let Wubi install U'u 12.04 LTS alongside XP yet.
I've been using vBox to test U'u out before wanting to do that.

My XP box has 3GB RAM and the hard drive has 140GB free.

Do You or Any one else know if the Oracle vBox is having issues? Thanks.
