Well I just got my full distribution pack of DVD's (8 in total), and I have a very quick question for those who happen to own a copy.

Question: There is a setup.exe on DVD #1, and I am wondering if this will hurt my windows 7 installation or not? See I installed Ubuntu using the Wubi.exe, and it setup the OS as a dual boot, and also installed it all to a file, and I'm just a little concerned.

I have read over the wiki concerning the windows installer, but it doesn't tell me if it will install it to a file like Ubuntu, and it doesn't seem to be an up to date (it offers a windows installer to be downloaded). Also is the setup.exe the windows installer or do I need the Windows installer.exe which can be downloaded?

I'm very confused here. I just don't want to risk my windows 7 install.

Any help will be very much appreciated...

Did you ever come to some resolution of that? I'm afraid I can't help you with it directly, as I've never installed it like that; IIRC, the last time I set up a dual boot system, I was able to have windows installed first then installed Debian & was sure to tell it to install the boot loader to the partition it was on rather than to the MBR of the drive. Then set Windows to handle the dual booting.

That was awhile ago, though. These days (in part due to not being able to keep as much hardware around as I'd like to use...<g>), I have MS Windows installed to virtual machines hosted on a Debian system. Currently I a Windows XP system and a Windows 8 Developers Preview system running that way...

Sorry for taking so long to respond.

The setup.exe will only allow you to do the initial installation.
It won't install it on your Hardrive like using setup for Ubuntu.

You still have to reboot in order to install the full working version
of Debian on to a partition or a full HD.

Debian does work well enough (not using setup.exe) in VMware, or another virtual machine. The only real unfortunate aspect of having it run in a VM enviroment is the lack of access to your Hardware such as your video card.
