I was reading Slashdot this evening, when I wound up on an old thread
about how slow Mozilla used to be compared to MSIE. A user commented
with some quotes from searchengineworld, and he noted the following
unrelated comment from the website:

"Mozilla and Opera enjoy a deeply loyal and active user base. MS on the
other hand is involved in court cases. We believe that there are few
companies on the planet today are more despised than Microsoft by it
own customers."

I got a good laugh from that. This was 2002, btw. :)

mozilla firefox still has that memory hole issue though.
i can have a few tabs open and leave it for a few hours and it's eating up 3 gigs of ram

Although I don't use IE, it seems that IE has gotten better over the years. However, I think the bit about Microsoft is still generally true. These days, many people have complained about the drastic changes made to the user interface with Windows 8, and although many still aren't very happy with it in Windows 8.1, I think people are getting used to it.

It's too bad that Firefox still has that issue. Firefox was my favorite and main web browser for a long time, but these days I tend to use Chrome.. I still prefer Firefox's UI over Chrome, but Chrome generally seems faster, and that's what I like about it. Also, in one of the recent versions of Firefox, they removed the option to hide the tab bar if you only have one tab showing - That was one option I always enabled, so I'm disappointed that they removed that feature.

At the time, they were comparing another Mozilla-based browser that
was light weight...I forget for the moment what it was.

I've been using SeaMonkey, and I haven't had any memory problems with
memory management, except for Adobe Flash. I occasionally have to
exit and reload, or kill the plugin directly, if I leave it running
more than a day.

This is on Linux; I haven't used Windows in years, and can't speak to
that.

Yeah, but you can close Firefox and open it up and the problem goes away.
You can't make IE not suck by re-opening it.

Yeah, but you can close Firefox and open it up and the problem goes
away. You can't make IE not suck by re-opening it.

Ideally you shouldn't have to close Firefox (or anything) at all if you don't want to.

ie isnt so bad anymore. it's comparable to chrome.
i'd rather not have a browser eat up system memory like a madman.

Buddy of mine keeps like 50 browser tabs open on Chrome, he said Firefox jus can't handle it and if Chrome crashes you can run it and continue working in much less time than firefox.

There's an app, that I've not yet trusted to use (it stores all of
the relevant data [unencrypted, I believe] in the cloud, so that you can access it from any machine with the relevant browser) called TabCloud.
You can save every session that you have open from browser crash or
unexpected shutdown and restore it from absolutely anywhere with net
access when you've got it installed and active.
I've got the same browsing habits as your friend, and an IT
developer friend of mine came across this-- he's even worse than me with
the 50+ browser tabs-- and recommended that I use it. I'm just too damn paranoid. I'd check it out, I've never had a bogus recommendation from
him.

Firefox was awesome back in the 1.0PR days. Around 2.0 was when it went to hell though, especially on Linux. I would use dillo if it weren't for the rendering issues and lack of plugins.

...hmm...maybe I should develop a dillo plugin myself...
