  • Retro wifi - Wyse WY-55 Terminal

    Hello everyone,

    I'm wondering if anyone will be able to assist me. I have in my possession an Amber Phospher Wyse
    WY-55 Terminal unit, I've attempted to connect it to the Simulant Wifi Modem but it doesn't work.

    If anyone has any ideas on what I can do?

    I've already changed the settings in the terminal to 1200 baud, but it doesn't do anything. If I
    increase the baud, I get a different combination of random letters and special charectors pop up
    when the modem is powered on, but nothing useful.

    Perhaps there's something I'm missing here.

    Got a mainframe handy? This is a dumb terminal and does nothing on it's own. The baud rate is the speed it communicates to the system its attached. You could try to connect it to a linux box to see it work.

    What's your Wifi modem set for? They are usually set for 300 BPS as default.

    I have a VT320 that I use in a similar way.

    When I tried it with my WiModem232 (https://www.cbmstuff.com/proddetail.php?prod=WiModem232OLED), I could not get it to work. I finally gave up. It's strange because that worked with every vintage computer that I owned.

    All the vintage computers used a straight through serial cable (sometimes 25-25, sometimes 25-9 pin). I did try the null modem cable - just to verify but no go.

    I decided I needed another wifi modem, so I picked this one up (https://www.tindie.com/products/theoldnet/serial-wifi-modem-for-vintage-computers/).
    This one worked with my VT320 right out of the box.

    Now, this one was a little strange. I had my VT320 hooked up to my Raspberry PI 0 with an RS-232 HAT. So I needed to use a null modem cable. But that same cable worked with the second wifi modem.
