Hi ALL,

Im looking at setting up a MESH network for a local community but not to sure where to start.

Has anyone had any experience of doing such a project?

If so what equipment, software etc...

The system is to be a closed "Off Grid" system with no internet attached at this time.

I know I will need a Web server & email server
Would a DNS server be used so people can have a domain name of this network?

Any help would be great

I've done a little bit of research into mesh networks, but not nearly as much as another user on my system here. As far as I know, much of your methodology is going to depend on what sort of system you're using to relay your network...

Not yet; like I said, I'm still working with some other people (well honestly they _were_ doing the working, and I _was_ trying to follow along, but they've all been pre-empted by the amount of other life bullshit that they've had going on lately). The technology that they were talking about using for it was, I believed, based on ARM chip technology, a lot like a RasPi kind of setup, though I'm not going to go into much more detail than that.

That would really depend on what you are trying to accomplish with this mesh network. What's the objective?

So you'll be just using it like a LAN/WAN? You could use something like OpenSSL to achieve something using existing digital links...

That's only going to help you if you're using hostnames on your own private meshnet, or if you've actually got your network hooked up to the internet, which is precisely what you stated would not be happening.
Anyway, depending on what is going on I can probably convince my friend to log back in here and to get in on this discussion...

Take a look at Broadband Hamnet. It is a full mesh network using commodity Linksys WRT-54G's (though the have said next version will not support them, which is kind of a crap move IMHO). In any case, Ubiquity's are not too expensive, but definitely not as commodity.

The project is really cool, but as I write this I am starting to question their
ability to execute, their direction, and their intentions.

in a was something like this already exist for amateur radio, X.25 protocol.

But i allways dreamed the yes WiFi could be use by people to create free
meshed network over towns. Early in the 2000 that almost happened in paris and other places in europe, but maybe it should be revived again.
