    Is Skype free? If it is, the reason for minor updates is because

    Skype was just bought out by Microsoft for $8.5 Billion...
    If it was free, which I didn't think it was, it probably won't
    be for long..
    Seems to me you used to buy the hardware and pay about $40 a
    year for service if memory serves, and it doesn't always... B)

    Windows -- Major version release with few Service Pack updates..

    Generally they release a free beta copy to hundreds of thousands
    of people to try to find most of the bugs before it is released
    for sale. Vista was the result of shortening that process..
    Windows 7 was the result of taking more time.

    It's free to download and use. You can call PC to PC, voice data and video.

    You'd pay to call to phones, pay more for an inbound number...much like other voip services. You can use a microphone and speaker/headphone on your computer, or buy devices to use with Skype. You can also purchase third party addons (although some are free).

    I was never very impressed with Skype, always seemed a bit buggy in the past compared with other solutions.

    I see.. the info I remembered could have been from someone supplying
    a 'kit' to use it to replace a home phone.

    Well I guess now that Microsoft has it we won't have to worry about
    that anymore.. B)
