I may be in the market for a new router, and I am looking for suggestions.

I currently have a D-Link DI-704P. It worked great until I tried doing a little too much with it. ;-) I had one problem that was fixed with a
firmware upgrade, but now I am having another & apparently I have the last upgrade. For the curious, I am trying to add a 6th firewall rule, and am
being told by the router that I cannot add any more.

I would like to find a new router that will support both wired and wireless connections and that is not too costly or too difficult to set up. In
addition to the normal "home internet" connectivity, here is what I currently use the router for, and would like to be able to use a new one for:

(1) I run a telnet & www bbs with incoming ftp connections. I am using the default telnet port as well as an alternate. Primary telnet port requests
are directed to one machine, while the altnerate telnet, www, and ftp
requests are being directed to another. I also would like the option to be able to run an nntp server, although I am not currently. In other words, I would need a router that would allow me to configure these options.

(2) I have a dyndns account that the d-link router handles. I would like
to continue to do this.

(3) I am using the router to allow passive FTP (for #1 above), and will
need to be able to do this easily. I am also attempting to use it to block http/port 80 traffic from certain ip ranges during certain times of the
day. This is where I am running into issues with the current router not accepting a 6th firewall rule.

(4) I am using the router as a firewall for the home network. I am not
using it as the network hub as I have a separate one, which is connected to
the router along with the cable modem. I would only use it as a hub for wireless connections.

(5) I have a laptop with a Belkin Wireless G card, and would prefer not to
have to buy a new card.

(6) I do use gnutella sometimes.

(7) Although the IP address that my cable ISP assigns to me is nearly static, it is technically a dynamic address that will sometimes change.

(8) I do not have a machine that has Windows as the primary partition. All
of them are debian or ubuntu linux (including the laptop), except for one machine that runs OS/2 Warp 4, and an old one that still runs DOS. I would need a router that does not require Windows XP or above to install firmware.

I figured I would ask for suggestions here, since most folks here are
probably running a BBS of some sort on their machines and therefore would
have some of the same requirements that I would.

I personally have a Linksys WRT160N which works pretty well for my needs for the most part though I am thinking of replacing the firmware with something like DD-WRT or some such, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I use a Linksys WRT54GL. One of the things I like about it is that it's an open-source router, and there is a selection of 3rd-party firmare you can use on it with various tweaks in addition to Linksys' own firmare. I've heard some 3rd-party firmware provides features beyond what the Linksys firmware provides. Also, it has been a stable router and has performed well. The Linksys WRT54GL is a popular router for the aforementioned reasons.

In my experience, the OS shouldn't matter for upgrading firmware, as long as you can connect to your router's configuration with a web browser and upload a firmware file. So you should be able to upgrade the firmware using one of your Linux boxes or your OS/2 box.
