Mr. O, I wrote this program for a reason in the first place. I am
contributing to the Synchronet community by helping out new sysops get on
their way. The original program does nothing to the effect that my supplementary program does. This automates a generated file list daily and moves it into a designated dir of your choosing. If you have a problem with
my program, then don't use it. Simply plain enough.

Mr. O, I wrote this program for a reason in the first place. I am contributing to the Synchronet community by helping out new sysops get on their way. The original program does nothing to the effect that my supplementary program does. This automates a generated file list daily and moves it into a designated dir of your choosing. If you have a problem with my program, then don't use it. Simply plain enough.

time someone distributed batchfiles, and it won't be the last. I've
been known to download bash scripts when they came in handy. And, DOS
command scripting has become a lost art, many people don't even think
about stringing commands together in a BAT file... having some
available to download and look at can be a learning experience.

I did, he's also distributing a copy of PKZIP.EXE which last I checked was copyrighted software, but 1993, is 2.04g considered freeware now?

Also I'd personally be worried that someone might try these .bat files and end up hosing their system.

Might want to consider adding to the readme something like "Backup your system before using."

I'd also maybe add some "if exists" lines to make sure you don't accidentally do something that puts something in the wrong place.

Also you use a set command to set sbbsctrl to c:\sbbs\ctrl\. Well, what if I have my bbs in c:\sbbs3 or d:\sbbs\? Ya just changed my enviornment variable.

If you're gonna change directories, you should try returning the user to whatever folder they called the .bat file from.

Use:
set olddir=%CD%

...at the beginning of your bat, then when you're done just...

cd /d %olddir%

...to go back.

Ton of explicit directory paths, would be better to find pkzip or test to see if pkzip is in the system path instead of requiring users to move files into other folders.

yeah, by the time I would get this working on my system I don't know I wouldn't be able to figure out everything on my own.

You call DELFILES without much explination of what you're deleting.

I made some changed that figures out where all the files are, that way you can just extract all the files into their own folder (anywhere on the sytem) and just run filelist <filebasename>

Who puts ECHO Y | DEL *.* into a batch file? What if some weird circumstance occured and the batch file happened to be in c:\ when that command was called?

Well it has been tested many times over and it runs perfectly on my system. I have not heard any negativity towards any exploitation that this program involves. Are you sure you're not trying to butcher me and take full credit ffor a program I decided to write because nobody else cared to? Something to ponder about there. Yes every person programs differently because everyone is taught differently. Do you that DM and Deuce program identically? No, because they were both taught at different times and different schools. So there.
Just my 1c for the day. If you have a beef then feel free to email me in private at the address in my package. Don't humiliate someone in public. It demoralizes your state of behaviourism.

also, you do not even HAVE a system. you have no public bbs and never HAVE
had a public bbs.
why would you even have files on your bbs when you never have had it online
and probably never will? you use someone else's internet access so you can not
host a bbs server.

O.k. I really am going to regret jumping into this peeing contest here.

Regardless of the copyright status, Pkzip as far as I am aware of

allows redistribution as long as it is distributed in whole. Distribute the original self extracting exe file and your covered. I'm guessing he didn't.

A preferred method would be distributing infozip's unzip.exe, however, I'm

pretty sure that infozip allows distribution as long as you enclose the license file stating it is free. I know infozip's unzip and zip are distributed with wildcat/winserver.

I know in this day and age, assuming anything about an operating system is

rather crazy, but you could embed all the files using a debug script or something similiar, but then you risk the sysop not having debug.exe on the particular os. Even if it was origially installed by default, some sysop's like to strip down their operating system.

Use wget.exe to download any missing files, and perhaps check for updates,

but then again, gotta distribute wget.exe with the batch file.

The best option is a program I had that I thik was batcom that you had to

register, you give it a directory that you store all your junk in, it creates a environment variable, you then use that environment variable to referece
your files, and do what you have to do... I think Quickbatch compiler does about the same.

is appropriate to distribute. A lot of Sysops have told me this in passing.

Renegade BBS installation package comes with PKZIP.EXE. PLus, another
argument is DM included Info-Zip with Synchronet v3.13a. So what's up with that? I never saw no license or distribution archive there. Explain that one for me. *sighs*

PKware is alive and well. Don't know what their status is on the 2.04g license. I sent them a message asking for clarification, but you can get the latest PKZIP for DOS (v2.50) at the following link:

http://www.pkware.com/software/pkzip/dos

It's $47 bucks, and you don't get support. Current PKZIP for Windows (v14.2) has a CLI so that's also an option if you're running Windows 64-bit.

I personally switched to 7Zip for everything on my board a while ago. Open Source, free. (http://7-zip.org/license.txt)

I just tried it with the line editor too. the /Q quote function works in
both full screen and line editor with no problems.

You have to remember to make sure the /Q is ON THE FIRST COLUMN. If you do
it in any other column, it won't work. I suspect you are trying it when it
is not in the first column.

Does Mystic have a fossil driver built in? i tried using iceedit and it said "unable to open fossil driver" or something to that effect.

It's not the author's fault. You've used Mystic before. It works just fine. He's copy/pasting text into the editor instead of quoting it, because he apparantly doesn't know how to quote -- even though he's been told the "/Q" option IN the editor many times.

i'm pretty sure the command lines in scfg's data files were changed
to infozip's format. i dont believe rob swindell is distributing infozip with OR without license information.

From looking at CVS, it looks like zip and unzip were distrobuted at one
time, but now they're marked (dead) and the reason they were removed is
because they're unnecessary.

Basically, the archiving commands are in scfg, but it is up to you to install the archivers on your OS, whichever ones you want to use. They're also listed as prerequisites now.

Unfortunately, Mystic does not have the ability to use external editors at
this time. Mystic does not use fossil drivers as far as I know. I use the linux version, but I've used the windows as well, and never needed it for Mystic proper. Doors might need it, but not Mystic.

yeah i didnt do too much digging but i did have an archive where i patched up from 3.1X to current binaries and didnt see infozip or license docs.

I've tried telling him about the "/" commands inside the message editor. He doesn't seem to grasp that, and blames Mystic for it not quoting the entire message for him. :(

PKware is alive and well. Don't know what their status is on the 2.04g license. I sent them a message asking for clarification, but you can get
the latest PKZIP for DOS (v2.50) at the following link: http://www.pkware.com/software/pkzip/dos
It's $47 bucks, and you don't get support. Current PKZIP for Windows
(v14.2) has a CLI so that's also an option if you're running Windows

I wouldn't say defacto standard, but definitely very popular in the
forum-style BBS softwares. There aren't a ton of ways to save and quote messages on a BBS, and /Q, /S, etc was definitely one of the few popular ones.

Some just need to realize Synchronet is not the end-all be-all software, and that other softwares are not going to do things exactly the way Synchronet
does it. That's why Mystic came about. Uniqueness/doing things differently is why there are different BBS softwares out there.

I'm back. So I told ya I reached out to PKWARE... Well a guy named Scott Daniel's wrote back to me. PKWARE is still kickin, and their licence/copyright for PKZIP 2.04g is still valid.

I also found out that you cannot distribute the program WITHOUT a distribution license (no word on pricing, but it's not free). What I believe that means is that if you want to use it for your own "program", ya gotta pay a licensing fee.

I have no idea with the deal is with infozip though or even who makes it, but I'm curious.

the pkzip guys are pretty cool. they'd probably give someone a deal on
pkzipc. infozip is released under gnu licensing i believe.
