Dude, I got a Signalink USB coming in Tuesday. I understand I can use it to do Packet Radio. So like how do I find your BBS via packet radio? What Frequency are you on, and anything else I need to know to connect to your BBS via packet?
We could of course try 300 baud packet on HF at some point, where in
theory you could connect to my BBS from the other side of the planet dependi on propagation. It would be interesting, if excruciatingly slow.
Dear God, no. I setup a packet system once using encrypted military radios sending/receiving @ 300 baud and for just sending small text files (logistics and maintenance stuff) in the field or on deployment it was hell. It was the 90s and since Clinton hacked our budget we had to "make
stations and we still had severe packet loss at times. HF on anything other than PSK31 I imagine would be a nightmare.
Indeed - my expectation is that anyone using Synchronet's packet radio support will be using it at a minimum of 1200 baud, preferably at 9600, 19200 or greater. I find it quite usable at 1200, although it wouldn't be my first choice for day-to-day usage.Yup, I thought it'd be cool to do for nostilgiac purposes. Bring back memories of when all I had was a 300 baud modem. Studying for the Extra test, I see a lot of info on digital modes. PSK31 sounds cool. My Signalink comes in tomorow. I'll be off Wednesday and Thursday to play with it. I just had a vision of me downloading the latest Synchronet via 300 Baud Packet Radio, and one of you guys coming to your screen to see what is going on and saying "Oh my God Some Moron is downloading Synchronet at 300 Baud!"

Signalink red USB box as well) and they work great. Just remember though, they're not true packet modems they're just USB soundcards designed for use with radios. Any packet work would have to be done in software on the PC side.

For those running Linux, I believe that soundmodem would be a good fit for this. For those running Windows ... not that I've tried very hard, but I've yet to see a soundcard packet program that doesn't make me want to retch.

That's why I just ordered another Pi w/512MB of RAM to experiment with this a Signalink USB.

be playing with it more tomorow. Being able to encode and decode morse code is pretty cool! Something you can't do with a TNC! Next is to get
