Well this takes the cake... Some things an OS should and shouln't do.
I have to look closer at the things that can not be disabled.. heh

    --- http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/11/02/microsoft-confirms-unstoppa ble-windows-10-tracking/

So how concerned should users be about Windows 10's default data collection policies? I would say very.

By default Windows 10 Home is allowed to control your bandwidth usage, install any software it wants whenever it wants (without providing detailed
information on what these updates do), display ads in the Start Menu
(currently it has been limited to app advertisements), send your hardware details and any changes you make to Microsoft and even log your browser
history and keystrokes which the Windows End User Licence Agreement (EULA) states you allow Microsoft to use for analysis.

The good news: even if Belfiore states you cannot switch off everything, editing your privacy settings will disable the worst of these. To find them open the Start menu > Settings > Privacy.

I never bothered with the host files, just the blocking/hiding of updates
that where never needed and included additional telemetry.

Xp-AntiSpy was always one my favorates for removing Microsoft bull crap back
in the day. It was slightly lacking with Windows 7 though, I hope to see a
new improved version for 10 would be the my best bet.

Same. Blocked the telemetry tracking updates to Windows (8.1). Feel no need

I run OSX with Little Snitch, which is a pretty epic personal firewall. But I allow/deny every single outbound connect on a per process basis... I wish there was something like that for Windows.

I don't mind Win7, but the worst part of Win10 is honestly the Xbox start menu. I hope you don't have a gag reflex because Mikeysoft will attempt to shove that down your throat... Most telling is that it can be disabled by *Enterprise* customers, but not Home/Pro users. Yeah, explain that one =)

I've been running win10 since the free upgrade, it has quirks but overall it works fine for everything i've done. Edge browser which is still crap is
loads better then ie11. Even though i use chrome for everything and firfox with noscript for all sites that i want to block adware on..

But the start menu and times are customizable.. it comes default with all this shit.. but i just deleted them all and no problems since.. :)

You can tweak the panels it includes, but it still always looks like an Xbox start menu, yeah? Can you make it look and act similar to the Win7 menu without installing Classic Shell? I'd be interested in seeing a screenshot =)

Ouch, ya IE is the worst piece of shit ever.. Edge isn't much better but at least is has some html 5 and css 3 support. It is a pain for older stuff that used java applets that no longer work in newer browsers anymore. That was pretty handy.. but guess all good things come to an end eventually.

I'm a Chrome head now dude.. Ran FireFox for years with noscript, but it just felt like it kept getting more and more bloated and slow. What I do not is run a more hardened browser (Chrome) with no plugins, click to play on the built-in parsers like Flash, and run a personal firewall so only 80/443 are approved. Soo many shitty high port redirects on sketchy sites.

All depends on the technology,, some of this stuff is like late 90's early
2000 it seems.. but other stuff being writting and re-written is useing all
the latest angular / react frameworks which doesn't have problems in modern browsers.. but of course every group has their preference and own priorities
so while some projects are doing recent stuff.. others are stuck maintaining crap. :)

This printer / scanner is just so damn handy and works so well, I keep
it going. Stopped printing correctly, took it to the local printer repair
guy (I couldn't believe he was still in business) and a week later I had a repaired unit back. Yes I could have bought a new printer for the cost, but
    I like this one. ;)

Due to laziness, and preference for easy to use interfaces I still
    love links2, and elinks.

There is something about the speed of them which makes them great for quick web browsing/light data/file searches.

While newer browsers do have the advantage of plugins, they are too cumbersome for simple web tasks.

In 1995 I had Lynx configured as a "Door" on my BBS... Obviously that

I do also seem to recall a linux BBS that operated with a lynx interface
it may have been web, it may have been a telnet/web hybrid I don't

I use lynx and links2 more these days then I did back then. Too much nonsense on the web sucking up my data. I have to use my smartphone to get online and need to keep my data down as much as possible. Other then "not being needed" why else do SysOps not interested in a lynx/elinks door?

I was under the impression Lynx wasn't being updated any more, but I just looked and it's last change was 2018-Mar-21... so I may just look into adding it again.

IIRC there are options to run it fairly securely. Some sites have more text oriented, but a lot of the issue IMO is that the modern web is an absolute clusterfuck so it's hard to navigate around without a large screen, javascript,
    and so on.

I was thinking that as well.. A text-only web browser wouldn't be very useful these days, IMO.

Has a Text based Browser with Javascript support been written? I love
links2 but it doesn't support javascript. Not sure if even supports http
2.0. For users that can only get online via landline I'm surprised
nobody has this option. The Sysop I knew had some kind of browser on his
BBS. It was a chat BBS called Cougars Liar. That was my first intro to
the internet. We could telnet out from his board. 20 plus years later, I
can't surf the Web from my favorite BBS. What's the deal with that?
DOH! ACK my Winsock.DLL just crashed!

Why could'nt I use an all text browser on a small screen?? I use links2
on my netbook. I'm not talking about displaying pictures and movies and
all the crap. I just want a browser to display just the text on a
website with SSL javascript or whatever the site uses to login. Ya know
when the web started it was all text. I just want to go to the products
web page and register, view the manual. I guess I'm asking to much. Even
if I disable movies, pics etc the browsers are still tooo slow.

Security, etc etc. Just a huge security hole to open up a browser from
the BBS. There are free shell accounts out there, I would recomend you
just use one of those, and then you've got your text browser, plus a
telnet client to get to your favorte BBS.

Check out 4G service (via sprint) as a "member perk" for supporting https://www.calyxinstitute.org/

First year is $500, includes equipment, after than $400/yr, unlimited.

I have this load balanced with a DSL line. Get about 20Mbit down on both, sometimes up to 30Mbit on the 4g line, and my upstream is 2Mbit on the dsl,
and around 9Mbit on the 4g. Not screaming fast, but sufficient, and no need
