There was one I recall called Phoenix. It was a 3 stage game where
you'd go through a wave of killing bird like creatures. The second had
these eggs going across the screen that would hatch to larger birds.
The third was a spaceship you had to break through and destroy.
What are your arcade memories?
Did you ever go to the arcade as a kid? Penny slots? Space Invaders? PacMan?
What were some of your favorite games to play?

Defender. I got too good at that, to the point that the machine would overflow and the world below would go away for a couple of levels. I
think I got a score of 1.6 million?
I had to quit after that.

I went to arcades fairly rarely, and I played arcade games more often
at restaurants that sometimes had a few arcade games set up in the restaurant. Some of my favorite arcade games were Joust, Ivan
"Ironman" Stewart's Super Off-Road, Centipede, and pinball.

I admit I'm more into rhythm games than retro arcade games, but my
*favorite* retro arcade game is probably /Galaga/. I blame my dad for
that. :P

Later on in teenaged years (ca. 1990-1998) I loved going to the WalMart with a friend and beefing on SFII, MK and MKII. Wasted the allowance for the week right there on Monday nights.
I like Root Beer Tapper. It's a cool game, and my local arcade has it.
the cabinet design is really "Old-Fashioned", complete with the wood
grain. I also enjoy Q-Bert. I have an animation cel of the Pac-Man tv
show by Hanna-Barbara. It's of the cat that chases Pac-Man's dog. It's
not really one of my favorite games, but I enjoy owning animation cels
of animation.
My brother loves Pinball. At one of our local arcades, there is a place called Ironblast Game Zone in Washington, PA. He loves going there,
There is also a place called PA Pinball nearby in Cranberry Township.
I have a buddy that has one of those full cabinet arcade games that has over 1000 games on it. Still kinda has the old feel to it, but you can select from a huge menu what games you want to play.
I've always wanted a pinball machine, but could never get myself to fork over thousands of dollars for one. :)

I did have to cross my arms though, I liked to do left and right with
my left hand and fire with my right, so left hand on ZX and right on
Return. I don't know if I could even do that these days.

Beats the Hell out of $22.

It wasn't a huge place, but there was plenty of games to go around.
They had all the current favs: Donkey Kong, Centepede, Frogger, etc.
My favorites were Star Wars, Star Trek, Frogger, Centepede, Joust...and
my best scoring game, Tempest; never got enough Tempest.

I was shocked that some of the VR shooter games were $7/play.
Some of the games are ancient, keeping them up and running is a chore.
'Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, and Mortal Kombat II.

Know the feeling. I paid a fiver and that was many years ago when VR
was still in it's infancy. The graphics were crude and the framerate
was about 15/sec. On top of that, the headset wasn't made for people
wearing glasses. From what I can tell, that situation hasn't changed
any.

You can now build virtual pinball machines. It basically consists of a large flat screen display, in a pinball fashion table...

Pinball was also huge. 'Fun House' comes to mind as my all time
favorite because the creepy doll would talk shit to you while you
played, but there were plenty of other good ones back then, too.

I remember when Wal-Mart (or Big K) would have the machines in the
entry ways. I always looked for pinball, but usually the closest
thing were the baseball machines. :-)

That is on the one I use on iPad... :-)
One day he brought home a pinball machine. My mother didn't like it,
but we put it in the living room. EVERY DAY after school that's the
first thing I would do. :-)
I think we had it about 8 weeks or so, then he traded it off for
something else... LOL
That was a great game. I haven't seen it in quite some time, though. The last really good one I played was Terminator 2 themed.

My family was NOT well off, so please don't think I'm saying we had
money. My dad was a trader - he would haul tires, buy tools wholesale
and sell to others, buy for the auctions, etc.
